About Me:
As it related to sports I'd like to stay active for as long as possible. The inner child is alive and well, crying out to play. I like to travel places to do my favorite sport or actitivity as listed below. And often hang out with like minded people and go to Europe or out west to ski and do other such adventures.
Favorite Sport or Activity
tele-skiing, yoga, mt. and road biking, trail running (hashing), open water swimming, windsurfing
Other Favorite Sports or Activities
kite-skiing, offroad-tri, adventure racing, surfing, kayaking, waterskiing, skateboarding, roller blading, ice skating, just about anything you do outdoors
Athletic or Fitness-Related Goals
compete in tris and running races. but mostly to be fit enough to have fun doing outdoor activities
Physical Injuries, Ailments or Conditions
what started out as a lower back strain in Nov and Dec. is now (March) a herniated disc (left between L5, S1). Hardly doing anything now as I heal with my numb foot.
Exercise/Training Techniques
running, biking, yoga, swimming, some weights (when the weather is bad or I'm hurt)
Dietary or Nutritional Supplements Taken for Sports or Activities
GU, sports drinks, glucosamine when I run too much and my left knee aches, multi-vitamins, etc.
Interventional Medical or Theraputic Treatments Used (e.g. Physical Therapy)
when hurt bad enough, I have gone to PTs

Sounds good. Let's try to ride this weekend. I should be around both days.

Do you have a new cell phone number? I have a 202 number that didn't work.

I'm not riding yet, Mike, but am gone from XM and plan to do a LOT of riding starting next week (week of May 5th), albeit much of it during the week, as opposed to on the weekend. Am also demo'ing the '08 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert this week and will then decide whether to bite the bullet (I LOVED the '07 I rode in Pisgah last fall). I also plan to ride for 3 days in Sun Valley in late July. How about you?

Sounds good. This past weekend I had the first runs in months without any pain. So I'm happy and very relieved again. I have Columbia on the schedule but haven't been able to train so I think I'll just do the swim and bike. Use it more as a training event. After I see how that goes I'd be up for some more this summer. I might try Richmond's Xterra too since I'll be in Italy for the Rocky Gap one. We'll have to do some riding soon. Mike

I love mountain biking and considered doing the Xterra Triathlon in Richmond. However, I just got a roadbike and want to put it to use. I will probably do the Bath County Tri in June.

Mike,

You've done some Triathons, right?
I'm training for my first one coming up in June.

I'm guessing this is Amy and not Adam (even though it says Adam). Good to see you online. I hope life isn't too busy.... I went to Down Dog once with Adam. I have a back issue that won't go away so I've pretty much dropped everything to see if that works. Kind of a big drag.

Glad to hear you are getting to Yoga so much. I really miss it and hope to be back soon.

Hey Mike! I'm going through my e-mail and never read this one! Apologies! Friend invitation accepted! I'm still learning about using Ning! BTW, love the music! It reminds me of my yoga class at Down Dog. I heard you tried out Down Dog, what did you think? I'm going about 3-4 times a week and love it!

Eating and Exercise - Timing it Right

Although most endurance athletes know the importance of fueling-up with carbs (while leaving enough time to digest before exercise), and replenishing with carbs and protein right after exercise, the average person could probably benefit from the same approach to their regular workouts (I'm sure many people still work out before breakfast). For more info., check out this article from the May Clinic, courtesy of Washington Sports Pe… Continue

Does Stretching Reduce Injuries and Post-Workout Soreness?..No, according to most research

The NYT recently featured this article saying that most research shows that pre and post-workout stretching does not reduce injuries and soreness. My questions are: 1) Do people believe this (I feel that stretching probably does help reduce injuries, somewhat)? 2) What about regular/on-going stretching, like Yoga (that would have to help reduce injuries, I would think)… Continue

Thai Massage Therapy - Totally Different from Typical/Swedish Massage

OK, after today's A.R.T. Treatment by Andy Smith (to bang out the last remnants of fibrosis in my shoulder capsule and knee before heading out to Tahoe and its measley 150" base), I decided to try a Thai Massage from Pam Ruangsakvicht, the massage therapist at Tim Scheuerman & Andy Smith's Advanced Chripractic Office in Sterling, VA. Both Tim and Andy told me that Pam was excellent and coordinates her therapy with a patient's treatment. Well, the mas… Continue

How do muscles fatigue?..by cellular calcium leakage.

According to a Coumbia University Study aimed at treating congestive heart failure, the cause of muscle fatigue is calcium leakage from muscle cells (Lactic Acid secretion had long since been discredited as the cause). With calcium-leakage blocking drugs, mice could run 10-20% longer - is an anti-fatigue drug on the way?..and would it be prudent?..

Proof that exercise slows the aging process?

[Modern] Athletes may live longer, according to this recent 10-year Study of 2,400 British twins which shows that those who exercised exhibited longer Telomeres - the protective caps on the end of chromosomes which shorten each time a cell divides, ultimately limiting cellular replication. Maybe, as Oasis said, "You and I are gonna live forever!"
